About the Artist
Hi there! My name is Sophia Truxell-Svenson, but you can call me Sophi. I am a Senior currently enrolled as a Drawing Major at George Mason University School of Art and Visual Technology. I invite readers into my stories through interactive book constructions and vivid colors. This helps to connect them to the themes I use in my comics of nature, family, and food, and explore how these themes intersect.
My art process builds like a campfire; I gather ideas and inspiration like kindling, spark it off with drawing and construction, and let it blaze in production. I sketch my comics in pen on paper and cut and paste them to solidify layouts. Then I either scan them in and digitally draw over them, or use a lightbox and dip pen to ink them on watercolor paper. This past year I have enjoyed the hands-on approach to printing that the Risographs offer; the unpredictability of the results adds a really beautiful hand to the final prints.
When Iām not drawing, I enjoy hiking and exploring nature (always with a pocket sketchbook and pen in my bag!). Nature is a great source of inspiration, and I love going along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah to draw at the overlooks.
